Chane van Rensburg, a second year NDip Industrial Engineering student and second year WELA (Women in Engineering Leadership Association) member, recently grabbed the opportunity to study abroad that WELA, in conjunction with the International Office, presented to her.

Chane’s biggest dreams are to travel and to be successful in her career by gaining as much knowledge as possible and hence, for this reason, she could not past up this opportunity. Chane heard about the exchange programme at Ingolstadt during the WELA Launch at the beginning of the year.

The process that Chane had to follow in order to apply was an easy one. She took the following steps:

  • Complete an application form at the International Office
  • Write a motivation letter
  • Take two passport photos of herself to the International Office
  • Make copies of her ID and Passport

After her application was approved, she had to go for an interview at the International Office. This interview was very informal and after a quick discussion with the panel, she was accepted.

Following her acceptance, Chane had to apply to study at the Technische Hochshule University in Ingolstadt via a very easy online procedure. Shortly afterwards, the University approved her application, gave her all the necessary information and arrangements and assigned a buddy to her. This buddy is responsible for looking after her while she is in Germany and to act as her guide and translator.

While Technische Hochschule recommended accommodation, this was ultimately Chane’s responsibility and she applied online through an organisation called “Studentenwerk”. She is very fortunate to have secured a single apartment in short walking distance to the University.

According to Chane, the biggest challenge thus far was applying for a Visa. Although she did not have to pay for a student visa, because of offline systems and postponed flights, she will only receive her visa a week after the intensive Germany course starts. She advises that applicants apply long in advance for their visas so that they do not experience the same delay.

Ingolstadt is an agreeable traditional city, better known for being the home of car manufacturer Audi. It was also the setting for the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

The city boasts a few fine museums, notably the Bavarian Army Museum and the German Museum of Medical History. The ceiling of the Asamkirche is the world's largest fresco on a flat surface.

Chane will be sending us weekly updates on her time in Ingolstadt, Germany so make sure to check in regularly for updates.
